Karen sharpe was born an only child in San Antonio, Texas. Her father was a successful businessman, owning three businesses. Karen’s mother was also a businesswoman and helped run the companies. However, their focus was on their young daughter. Karen’s mother entered her in ballet and dancing at a very young age. She loved performing in San Antonio’s theatrical productions, which led to ice‐skating. She developed into quite a good skater and she and her mother spent a summer in Los Angeles so Karen could further her talents as a skater. However, Karen’s mind was not as much on skating as it was on motion pictures. Having to return to Texas to begin a school year was a miserable experience for her. She gave up skating to pursue theater in San Antonio. She was so focused and determined that her family allowed her to return to Hollywood, finish school and pursue her dream. Having no connections and few friends and accompanied by her mother, she went to school and then joined a local theater company. A talent scout from MGM discovered her in a theater production and he persuaded MGM to test Karen for a studio contract. When MGM turned her down, she was devastated. The talent scout believed in her ability and took her to his friend who was an agent and convinced the agent to give Karen a chance. She began modeling for the famous Paul Hessey and became a cover girl. Her face appeared on magazine covers and billboards. She was a Max Factor face model and was photographed by Marilyn Monroe’s favorite photographer Willenger. At seventeen she appeared in her first motion picture, Stanley Kramer’s “The Sniper.” (She did not meet Kramer at this time.) This led to Allied Artist’s casting her as the lead in a small budget film “Army Bound.” She received very good reviews and the company cast her again as the lead in the new popular cult film “Bomba and The Jungle Girl” (film was produced by Walter Mirish). Photoplay, a popular magazine presented her with an award as the most promising new actress of that year. Her agent took her to see famed director William Wellman whom was casting “The High and The Mighty” starring John Wayne and an all‐star cast, a very big budget film released through Warner Bros. Wellman tested Karen and she got the part. It was a prestigious film with many awards. Karen received the Golden Globe for her performance. She immediately was cast opposite Robert Mitchum and her co‐star from “The High and The Mighty” Jan Sterling in the film “Man With a Gun.” She received more good reviews. Karen was in demand for film but she was intrigued with live television and was cast as the lead in the prestigious Hallmark Hall of Fame, the first hour‐long live telecast, “The Life of Moses.” Not many actors were capable of appearing on live television but Karen’s theater background had helped prepare her, so now she was in constant demand for Hallmark Hall of Fame, Playhouse 90, Studio One, Matinee Theater and many others. She was nominated for an Emmy for her performance on Matinee Theater. Life Magazine named her the busiest actress in television. She has appeared as the leading lady and guest artist in almost every television show during the 50’s and 60’s, over 80 appearances. She appeared in 12 motion pictures and has appeared on radio where she had her own show. She also toured all over the East Coast in the theatrical production “Wedding Breakfast” opposite Piper Lourie. She was also Aaron Spelling’s first leading lady for CBS “Johnny Ringo” which lasted two years. Jerry Lewis asked Karen if she would play opposite him in his comedy “The Disorderly Orderly.” She accepted. This film would change her life forever… While filming “Disorderly Orderly”, Stanley Kramer was filming his “Ship of Fools” on the next sound stage. While working on the Paramount lot she was introduced to Kramer. He asked her for a date…It took a year before she accepted. She married Stanley Kramer a few months after their first date. During their marriage she worked alongside Stanley on all of his productions and he opened up the world of producing to her. They had two children and moved out of Beverly Hills and settled in Seattle, Washington to raise their family. Karen wanted their children to have a more normal upbringing. They stayed in the Northwest for over ten years. Karen opened a school for young people in the arts. Many of her students are successful in the industry today. Upon returning to Los Angeles in the early 90’s, Karen produced her first film, the remake of her husband’s “High Noon” for TBS. Since her husband’s passing in 2001, she and her two daughters have their own production company “KNK Productions Inc., and are in development on several films. Karen has established the Stanley Kramer Library, the Stanley Kramer Foundation and her own production company – KNK productions, Inc. Karen has maintained the Stanley Kramer Library and also established the Stanley Kramer Award at the Producer’s Guild, and the Stanley Kramer Fellowship Award in Directing at UCLA in 2001. Both of these awards honor socially conscious young filmmakers. In 2012 Karen has established another company with her long time writing partner Rod C. Spence. The company Kramer/Spence Entertainment is in pre‐production on several films. She is a long time member of the Producers Guild of America.
